Couples have always been my favorite kind of sessions. In such a short amount of time, you get to know their personalities, their journey, and the little things that make their relationship theirs—all while creating images that will last forever. Crazy, right? The more couples I photograph, the more I realize just how precious each snapshot is. So how do we make sure it continues to feel that way during and after the session?

For starters- Know Your Couple. Seems pretty straight forward but can easily get lost in the chaos of the session. “But Emily, how could I get to know them?” I love to send my couples questionnaires; this allows them to share their story, interests, vision, and personality. It helps get to know their love story, how to create the session around their story and interests, and have fun together. Understanding who they are and what brings them together allows me to interpret that in their photos.

Read the Room. Sometimes couples need a break. Maybe a pose feels uncomfortable, or the energy needs to shift. If we’ve had a lot of high energy moments, it can be refreshing to slow things down and create a quieter, more intimate space for them to simply be together. I often encourage couples to imagine I’m a “fly on the wall,” stepping in only when I see something that needs to be gently guided or preserved. This creates room for natural movement, candid moments, and far less pressure to nail the “perfect pose.”

Understand Their Intimacy. Some couples feel completely at ease in front of the camera—and that’s amazing. Others may be more reserved, shy, or prefer to keep their intimacy private. My questionnaire gives couples the opportunity to communicate boundaries and comfort levels ahead of time. During the session, I continue to check in and communicate openly, creating space for them to stay within those boundaries—or, if they choose, to gently explore something new.

Keep it Fun! It has always been important to me that sessions feel lighthearted and fun. Love brings people together, and there is so much joy within that connection. Whether it’s my sub-par dad jokes or a silly story they share about one another, I want couples to walk away smiling and laughing! These moments are fleeting, and I truly believe this is what makes all the difference in comfort—and in enjoying the experience.

This is just a glimpse of what memories we can capture together. Let’s create your dream session.
